These are 2 articles that appeared on December 20 and 27, 2012 in a local Chungnam (Chungcheong-do – PSH’s home province) area e-newsapaper, written by the Publisher-cum-CEO. We have combined the two and concentrated on the parts on PSH. There’s a lot on his mother and his younger brother Wuho (a retired professional baseball player) which leaves no doubt who is the apple of her eye.

Actor Park Si Hoo is very much in the news these days with the explosive popularity of his current SBS weekend drama “Cheongdam-dong Alice” and his recent appearance on the SBS entertainment program “Healing Camp” in which he talked about his hometown (Buyeo County in Chungcheong-do) and local topics which attracted a lot of attention. Many of us sat together with the whole family in front of the TV to watch the broadcast.
I have known the Park family for more than 20 years, and I have many memories associated with them. Mrs. Park, Sihoo’s mother, whom we call “Aunt”, is very pretty and always prepares delicious food. His father, Park Yong Hoon, is very handsome and tall and the object of envy of his friends. Moreover, at that time it was unusual to be an advertising model [Mr. Park Sr.'s profession], and we all thought he looked so cool.
His mother Mrs. Park always looks so stylish and she also has a warm heart. We often saw her waiting for her younger son Wuho at his high school. When he was playing baseball, his mother used to go along. I have vivid memories about all these.
When the mother was taking care of Wuho, she would prepare more than 100 servings of Bulgogi [grilled marinated meat] for us – her car rear seat and trunk were full of delicious food for his baseball teammates. And she would also take us to the best luxury restaurants ‘Plum Garden’ and ‘Pagoda Gardens’.
My friends and I were full of praise of the beautiful aunt’s exceptional food and her generosity. As I remember, Pyungho (Sihoo real name) was then in Seoul sweating it out trying to carve out a future for himself.
Wuho had been playing baseball since elementary school and he had the build and talents of a born infield pitcher. When Wuho entered middle school, our friendship grew and it continued through high school. We all liked Mrs. Park who was the most popular mother in our baseball community with her perfectly prepared food.
At the time when Wuho was the Prince of Baseball in high school, sometimes Sihoo used to come home. I remember him as skinny and well-mannered. And now he is a star, and his parents’ influence has borne fruit.

I remember the story about their ancestral home called “Plum’s Landing”, the well-built hanok [traditional Korean house] where Sihoo and Wuho were born, surrounded by high mountains with warm sunshine throughout the four seasons. Legends say that where the plum blossoms fall, a famous person will emerge. In a way, the mother of Sihoo already found this perfect spot 30 years ago. There is hope for the future, coming down through the family tradition and etiquette. The children have been educated to give back to the community.
Esteemed qualities like traditional filial piety and good manners are important for children and these come from the parents’ influence. They have a very great impact on Sihoo’s donation to his hometown [16 million won] and the huge amount of scholarships for his alma mater [16 million won].
In October 2012 Sihoo showed his warm heart by donating 5 million won to his former middle school and 10 million won to his high school, as well as sponsoring an athletic event of his alma mater [1 million won] — keeping his promise to his grandfather.
When Sihoo started his acting career, his grandfather said to him: ”Do not forget your origins. After you become successful, you must repay your hometown.” And Sihoo replied: “Do not worry. I will keep my promise.”
Apart from Sihoo’s promise to his grandfather in keeping a great family tradition, there is something else that I want to mention. Born into a prestigious family and having spent a wealthy childhood, Sihoo nevertheless went through a tough time training to be an actor.
Sihoo is ending 2012 as the most popular actor and his whole hometown is rooting for him. His “Cheongdam-dong Alice” and “Healing Camp” are the talk of his hometown, and children are talking about hopes and dreams coming true like their “Star”.

When I was translating this, I was full of mixed emotions. I remember an interview* I translated sometime last year in which PSH said he was not much noticed at home and his younger brother (who had shown early promise in playing baseball) was the center of everybody’s attention. I suppose it’s a big deal to be a baseball star South Korea, so when Wuho became a professional baseball player, he did his family proud – 光宗耀祖 (bring glory to his ancestors.) The whole family’s hopes were pinned on Wuho. The famous person in the family who was to emerge from Plum’s Landing was thought to be Wuho and not Sihoo.
While Wuho was the baseball star in the making (with Mom entertaining everybody), Sihoo was roughing it out in the cold and damp health club basement in Seoul. When he reached the end of his tether and called his mother, she was unsympathetic. This is in another interview which I remember very well. (As soon as Sihoo heard his mother’s voice, he started crying, but she … ) So he gritted his teeth and forged forward — for 10 long years.
As it turned out, Wuho’s baseball career ended prematurely (due to injuries, it was reported) and Sihoo’s finally took off. Sihoo did not have a management company then, and Wuho served as his manager when he was shooting “Iljimae” (2008). The brothers who did not use to see much of each other before (because Wuho was at baseball camp from a young age) became very close.
It is good to see the two brothers like two peas in a pod. Blood is thicker than water. And Plum’s Landing finally has a famous son.
