Confession of murder” surpasses 2.5 million viewers in spite of plagiarism controversy
It was once involved in a plagiarism controversy, but the movie “Confession of murder” has surpassed 2.5 million viewers in a matter of 27 days, passing the breakeven point to be a box office success.
According to statistics released by the Film Council’s Integrated Network, on December 4 “Confession of murder” mobilized an audience of 22,629 in 295 cinemas nationwide, with a cumulative audience of 2,516,947 people, ranking # 3 at the box office.
First released on November 8, “Confession of murder” exceeded 2.5 million in 27 days. The break-even point is 1.8 million people, so it has successfully passed the box office test.
On November 13 the screenplay writer Yoon Mu accused “Confession of murder” of plagiarizing his work and went to Seoul Central District Court to sue the producers, the distributor Showbox Mediaplex, Co-Publisher multicellular Club, and the director Jung Byung Gil, as well as applying for an injunction against screening of the film.
In response the production company denied any charges of plagiarism and proved a comic artist already completed all sketchwork on the Sinop (system) in 2011. They insisted the lawsuit had no merit.
COM is about the confrontation between the serial killer (Park Si Hoo) who becomes a star after publishing his penitence autobiography and the detective (Jung Jae Young) who is determined to bring him to justice. It is written by the director Jung Byung Gil, based on the true story of the Japanese Issey Sagawa who wrote a bestselling book on his cannibalistic activities in Paris and also inspired by the movie “Memories of Murder”.
